The Problem

• Trustworthy news is harder to find, and often less engaging than social media.

• People want credible info, but long reads feel like a chore — and social formats, while familiar, aren't always accurate.

• Vizzy turns long-form articles into short, interactive data visualisations — social media energy, verified sources.

Outcomes

  • Transformed dense articles into short, interactive visual stories

  • Built trust through source verification and clear labelling.

• Delivered a mobile-first prototype blending social formats with reliable, data-led storytelling.

Research

Survey findings shaped the direction early: interactive visualisations landed well, bubble charts confused people, colour worked, and short-form video was the most-loved way to learn something new.

From there I built empathy maps, personas and a value proposition canvas — landing on three user types based on data confidence, which drove feature prioritisation. Competitor analysis (news apps and social platforms) plus a SCAMPER exercise pushed the concept further, shaping features designed to build motivation and bridge the data-divide.

Design & Development

I marked up competitor apps to study what worked (and what didn't), then moved into low-fi wireframes and user testing — using what I learned to refine before building high-fidelity screens in Figma. These were brought into Framer, where I added interactive components and micro-animations throughout.

Rive Animations

Using Rive, I animated and built interactive data-visualisations to encourage the user to interact with the news story. I tested the animations on my phone and increased the size of hitboxes and buttons to improve usability. I explored the use of blend states, nested art boards and joysticks, while using the state machine to build smooth, responsive interactions.

Conclusion

Vizzy let me rethink how people engage with news — turning dense articles into short, interactive stories. It pushed me creatively and technically across motion, interaction and format. There's more I'd refine, but it nails the core goal: making reliable information easier, and more enjoyable, to take in.
